Why Can’t I Make a Decision?

Something I have noticed is coming up a lot for people is that decisions are especially challenging lately. Does that feel familiar? You feel like when it comes to what to make for dinner or what movie to watch - you feel completely unable to pick one. If that does feel familiar, you're not alone. You know how I've been talking about how the pandemic is still weighing on us, even if we've found a new rhythm? Well, that's just it. We're expected to be working at our normal pace and going back to life when we haven't recovered.

The science behind it. Well, when we're stressed, the part of our brain that makes decisions (prefrontal cortex) goes offline, to prepare for survival. The prefrontal cortex is the part of our brain that finishes developing last (at about age 25). So, when we're navigating our busy work schedules, arranging meetings, and figuring out where and when we feel safe - it makes sense that you would reach decision capacity.

I want to invite you to take extra time to not make decisions. Whatever that looks like for you. A time for you to slow down and not make decisions for a little. Just be.

As always, take what is helpful and leave the rest. I hope you have the week you need.
