On Being Messy
I had one of those days yesterday where everything that was planned out to set me up for success for my busy day failed and unexpected obstacles cropped up, as well. This led to Mindful Monday not being possible yesterday. I thought about adding an apology to this, but then spent some time examining why I felt the need to apologize. I realized that this was coming from a place of perfectionism.
Perfectionism is permeated throughout our culture due to systems that enforce feelings of constant productivity to prove your worth. Perfectionism breeds a lot of anxiety, worthlessness, and self-doubt. When we all continue to try to show up as perfect, we perpetuate this myth that perfection is something that we can attain. This can lead to shame, lack of risk, lack of emotion expression, and lack of creativity. All things that make us human.
So, I wanted to invite you to do something imperfect this week. Whether that's as small as trying a new meal/activity or as big as letting someone you care about see some messy emotions. When we allow ourselves to show up as full humans, we create space for others to show up as full humans, as well.
As always, take what's helpful and leave the rest. I hope you have the week you need.
